On May 14th, Ile Omode hosted its first-ever "Major" Taylor Bike/walkathon at the San Leandro Marina. The initial fundraising goal for this event was $20,000. With the help of dedicated contributors in the community, Ile Omode doubled its goal, raising over $40,000! For several of the youngest students this was their first time riding a bicycle, and more than a few brand new bikes were on hand at the park. Second-grader, Sean Paul Harris, learned to ride his bike on this day. Whether it was the biking, water gun fight, or just playing with friends, the day couldn't have gone any better. Third-grader, Ahmeer Muhammad, exclaimed, "this was the best day of my life!" Mama Akanke recounts the event as, "one of the most beautiful days at Ile Omode that I've experienced". Mama Tamara, parent to Eden Lewis (5th grade), stated, "this was so important for the kids, and I truly felt the spirit of Ile representing. I felt blessed to have spent this time with all the other parents and staff!" Special thanks to the project coordinator, Mama Kellie Hunter, the project team, staff, parents, and our donors. This event couldn't have been done without our community. The bikeathon was conceived just earlier this year, and great planning by staff and parents made the event possible. The organizing committee chose to honor Marshall Walter "Major" Taylor, a professional cyclist who was just the second African-American to win a world title. He faced untold racism on his climb to the highest ranks of the sport, but was a determined athlete. There are several books available to learn more about "Major" Taylor, including a children's book, "Major Taylor, Champion Cyclist" and a book for adults, "The World's Fastest Man". Both books are available from Marcus Books.
