Since 2009, Ile Omode has enrolled students at Laney College in Oakland, where students complete the college's advanced Algebra course. This year was no exception, as 6 eighth grade students completed the course. However, what was unusual this year, is that 2 of the 6 students completed the course in record time, and then enrolled in Trigonometry in the spring semester. Six students from the class of 2023 - Daniel, Zahra, Cassydi, Sholeh, Kai, and Michelle, all completed advanced Algebra, and each student earned an "A" in the class. This was the second largest group to complete coursework in the class, just one student shy of the 7 that did so in the 2021-22 school year. However, Kai and Michelle outpaced any student in Ile Omode's history. The course is divided into 4, one unit courses, and Kai completed the first course in a single weekend, just ahead of Michelle, who also did so in record setting time. Every previous student started the course in the fall semester and completed it in the spring, but the two completed the entire course in a single semester, and thus were ready for an even greater challenge. The two students enrolled in MATH50, a Trigonometry course, offered at Laney College, and after a quick adjustment to the new material, they continued to stun their instructor and classmates - earning an "A" in the course before even starting a high school. Michelle felt, "the class prepared me for high school", as she makes her way to College Prep in Oakland. Kai is on the opposite side of the Bay Area, and will attend Menlo in Atherton. He believes, "taking Trig in 8th grade means I'm ready for advanced math work in high school". Along with Kai and Michelle, we know all of the students, Daniel, Cassydi, Sholeh, and Zahra, will do incredibly well in high school math class in their freshman year of high school.
