Malia Jenkins (c'17) graduated from the ROTC basic training during the summer. The Howard University sophomore completed the U.S. Army's 1st Regiment, Basic Training Camp as a member of Howard's ROTC program. Among 500 cadets, just 14 received awards of distinction, and Malia was one of the awarded cadets. She received the Military Order of the World Wars Award. The training camp award is given to the cadet who, "best demonstrates the ability to evaluate, analyze, apply and understand experiences and capabilities to solve tactical problem sets". The 500 cadets were from colleges throughout the country, and several cadets were HBCU students. Malia was one of two students who were honored. Malia joined the Army ROTC at Howard University in her freshman year, and has been enrolled in ROTC coursework and training ever since. Her work in ROTC has earned her a U.S. Army ROTC Scholarship which covers a significant portion of her tuition. She is a political science major, and has remained on the Dean's List every semester. Along with her involvement in the ROTC, Malia has also interned with the former Senator Diane Feinstein's office as a legislative intern, and in the previous summer she interned at the McCain Institute for International Leadership. Malia has been incredibly active in college, and is considering signing a contract to enlist after she graduates in 2024, while she ponders pursuing law school.
