Mama Aisha, Malcolm X first-grade teacher, was tasked with the assignment of looking for math books for all elementary grades. She corresponded with sales reps from Harcourt and McGraw-Hill. “It came down to 2 programs that could fit what we needed. McGraw-Hill had better resources for students and teachers. Also, the online resources are easy to use and navigate” she states.
The kindergarten and first-grade classes were using the McGraw-Hill math books for the last five years. Mama Aisha states, “we wanted uniformity and to assure students were getting consistency. We wanted there to be a connection between elementary grades K-4 where they are using this series”.
“McGraw-Hill My Math inspires students to embrace the power of math through real-world applications, experiencing just how fun math success can be. The program interweaves the three components of rigor — conceptual understanding, procedural skill and fluency, and application — enabling your students to steadily progress and grow their math confidence.”
The McGraw-Hill consumables are lighter than textbooks and allow teachers to remove pages as needed. Students can write within the books for a hands-on and interactive experience in class. After the staff evaluated the sample material and the online resources, it was agreed that this was the best option for Ile Omode students.
