Cupcakin Sponsors College Tour
 Monday, February 10, 2020
The founder of CupCakin Bakery, Lila Mae Owens, provided sponsorship for 5 Ile Omode middle school students' college tour trip to Atlanta in April, totaling $2,500.
Scholarships were awarded to Samahdi (8th), Kassidy (8th), Future (7th), Jamilla (7th), and Chimezie (7th). The students each received $500 towards the full payment for the college tour.
Twice, every three years, Ile Omode's middle school students experience an out-of-state college tour. They visit Washington, DC and Atlanta, Georgia. Since 2009, students have participated in 7 tours, and 2020 will be their 8th tour, and the fourth time to Atlanta, where they also spend a day in Alabama visiting Tuskegee University, and several other stops.
Owens was first introduced to Ile Omode at a local event. She began a foundation, the Lila Mae Foundation with the hope of creating a college tour to Howard University. Owens is a Howard alum and wanted to expose Bay Area students to the university and its offerings. She's credits much of her success to attending the Washington, DC HBCU, and says her attendance was only possible because of the encouragement of a mentor. Having heard about Ile Omode's experience with college tours she decided to support the school's efforts instead.
Cupcakin' has bakeries in Berkeley (2391 Telegraph - near UC Berkeley) and Oakland (Swans Market, 907 Washington Street), and a new bakery opening in North Berkeley by April 1.
