 Wednesday, October 30, 2019
On Thursday, October 17, Ile Omode's dancing and drum teams performed at the Western Region Council on Black American Affairs' annual conference held at Chabot College in Hayward, California. The conference's theme was, "Reclaiming our Narrative", and it was hosted by the Black Education Association and the Peralta Association of African American Affairs.
The group was invited by Ile Omode parent, and Chabot College Dean, Dr. Jamal Cooks. Dr. Cooks, Chabot College's Language Arts Division dean, extended the invitation to Ile Omode, and the school happily accepted.
The performance group regularly receives performance request throughout the year, but this was the earliest in the school year the group has performed. Generally it takes several months of training to develop the students. Baba Nimeely, Ile Omode's dance and drum instructor, said, "I'm really proud of how quickly our students got ready for the performance."
Along with returning students, several new students joined the performance team, including sixth graders Barry, Naasir, Zaakir, Morgan, Osereme, and Khaleeb. Students are chosen by Baba Nimeely based on their demonstrated abilities in the weekly dance and drum classes.
