Students Win Film Festival
 Sunday, October 28, 2018
AfroComicCon occurred from October 19th to the 21st, and this year featured a mini film competition for youth. A number of Ile Omode middle school students were honored for their submission in the mini film category, including 7th grader, Malachi Ray, who won best picture for “Kid Lighting”.
This year was the first film festival, and was organized by Ile Omode parent, Baba Baba Johwell Baptiste. He visited middle school students to promote the event, and students were offered a bonus credit in their Humanities course (Ile Omode’s equivalent of an English class) for participating in the event. Most students jumped at the chance.
The Youth mini-film festival was organized in collaboration with Johwell St-Cilien Films and Gritty 1z Productions. It featured categories for high school and middle school students, and Ile Omode middle school students entered several films.
Seventh grader, Malachi Ray, won "Best "Picture" for his film, "Kid Lighting", about an enhanced teen who possess super speed. Malachi's film is filmed on site at Ile Omode and also in his neighborhood.
The 1st runner up for "Best Picture" was "Rescue Mission", a collaborative effort by Samahdi Scott (7th), Adesina Tyler (7th), Future Reed (6th), and Tariq Anderson (7th). They filmed the spy based film at Adesina's home.
Seventh graders, Savannah Perkins and Kassidy Collins received 2nd runner up for their film, "Be Careful".
The film festival also honored Boots Riley, the writer and director of "Sorry to Bother You". He was the recipient of the first AfroComicCon Local Inspiration Award for participating in the AfroComicCon Film Festival. The AfrocComicCon was a great opportunity to showcase local artists, and also provide young people a chance to craft their own visions.
