Mama Daughter Celebration
 Thursday, November 15, 2018
Do you know your mama's favorite song, artist, color or even dream career? This fun exercise was a way of letting girls explore how much they knew about their mamas. Then it was the mamas’ turn. The girls were excited and surprised to know how much their moms knew about them, except of course, for their favorite song, artist and dream career. Both came away thinking, “we need to talk more”.
On a wonderful Saturday morning, middle school girls and their mothers met for a bonding experience at Mama Pam's home for the school's Mama Daughter Celebration. The event was coordinated by Mama Kara (2nd grade teacher), Mama Aisha (preschool teacher) and Mama Carlynn (grant coordinator).
We began our morning by pouring libation to honor and remember the shoulders we stand on, and to acknowledge the spirit of our ancestors. Everyone shared breakfast, and enjoyed an ice breaker activity, which was the “Familiarity Game” played like the “Newlywed game”. How well do mothers and daughters know each other? It became quite competitive “Make sure we get credit for that answer because I want to win", 8th grader, Colby advised. The winners of the "Familiarity Game" were Mama Keishna and daughter Anaya Hamilton (8th grade), who Skyped in to participate.
Communication is key to a healthy and happy family environment. A habit which this past weekend laid testament to. They learned and enjoyed new discoveries about each other in music, movies, friendships, food and how much they are like each other, but also their differences as well. Having serious conversations about health, attitude, communication and relationship. It was hilarious and so much fun.
Mama Vicky dropped in with her oldest daughter, Ile Omode alum, Maya Jenkins (c'14), who is currently attending UC Merced. Maya also brought along her roommate, Antonnette Kaguhi. The two are both biology majors, and shared with the girls the importance of taking advantage of what Ile Omode teaches and nurtures. Maya found that the study habits Ile Omode instilled is making her university life easier to navigate, as well the conversation forums she enjoyed with her sister-girlfriends of Ile Omode.
Everyone discussed making commitments and promises. They rediscovered the importance of knowing each other and that continued growth occurs best when they are open and honest with those they love and trust. While the mamams and daughters didn’t get to do everything they planned they did came away with a desire to get together more often.
Mamas and daughters in attendance received a gift of appreciation for their participation, provided by Mama Carlynn’s "Vanity Adorns".
